Why Register?

Why RV Registration Matters

Legal Requirement
All motorhomes must be registered as motor vehicles in the state of primary use. Towed trailers and fifth wheels also require registration in most states, regardless of whether they have engines.
Insurance
Most states require proof of insurance to register a motorhome or large trailer. Valid registration confirms you carry the required liability coverage, protecting you and others on the road.
Proof of Ownership
An RV title is your legal proof of ownership. It's required when buying, selling, or financing any RV. Without a clean title, you may be unable to sell your RV or obtain a loan against it.
Resale Value
A properly registered and titled RV with a clean chain of ownership fetches significantly more at resale. Buyers will always ask for the title — don't let a paperwork issue cost you thousands.

FAQ

Common RV Registration Questions

No — trailers, fifth wheels, and travel trailers must be registered in your home state before you can legally tow them on public roads. Most states also require a separate title for trailers above a certain weight (commonly 1,500–2,000 lbs). Operating an unregistered trailer can result in fines and may void your towing vehicle's insurance coverage in the event of an accident.
A motorhome (Class A, B, or C) is a self-propelled motor vehicle and is registered exactly like a car or truck — same DMV process, license plates, and insurance requirements. A travel trailer, fifth wheel, or popup is a non-motorized towed vehicle and registers separately, often with a different fee structure and sometimes a simpler process.
Most campgrounds and RV parks do not verify registration at check-in. However, state park campgrounds may require current registration plates to be displayed, and law enforcement can cite you for expired registration at any time. For full-timers staying in one location for extended periods, some states have specific residency rules that may require local registration.
Many states calculate RV registration fees based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) because heavier vehicles cause more road wear. Class A motorhomes (often 30,000–40,000 GVWR) pay significantly more than popup campers. Some states use vehicle value (ad valorem tax), age, or length as additional factors. Always check your specific RV's weight class before budgeting for registration.
Most states require you to register your vehicle within 30–90 days of establishing residency. For full-timers without a fixed domicile, states like South Dakota, Texas, and Florida are popular choices due to their lower fees, straightforward registration process, and favorable no-income-tax environments. You'll need a mail forwarding address in the state you choose as your domicile.
