DNR-run systems tend to have a few advantages over private third-party platforms: no advertising, direct customer service from state staff, and integration with the state's hunting and fishing license systems (you can often see your license, tag applications, and campsite bookings in one account). The tradeoff is that each DNR portal has its own quirks, login system, and interface.

What Counts as a "DNR" System?
There's variation across states in what the state parks and camping agency is called. All of the following operate similarly and are grouped here:
- Department of Natural Resources (DNR) — Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Indiana, Maryland, Georgia, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, and others
- Fish & Wildlife Department / Commission — some states manage state parks under the fish-and-wildlife umbrella
- State Parks & Recreation — California, Colorado, Texas, Washington operate under this label
- Forestry Department — some state forest campsites are booked separately through forestry rather than parks
Why Book Direct with the DNR?
- Lower or no reservation fees — several DNRs charge no reservation fee at all
- Integrated license accounts — book your campsite for hunting season using the same login as your hunting license
- Better local info — DNR sites often include current stream conditions, campground closures for wildlife management, and links to the local ranger station
- Support for WMA and state forest camping — private platforms rarely handle these; DNRs do
Booking Windows Vary Wildly
Unlike Reserve America (which usually standardizes 6 months) or Recreation.gov (which uses monthly release windows), DNR systems set their own booking rules. Minnesota opens 120 days out; Michigan opens 6 months; Maryland opens a full year in advance; Wisconsin opens 11 months.
