Know Your Rights

Why CCW Permit Knowledge Matters

Self Defense
The Second Amendment protects the right to keep and bear arms. A CCW permit allows citizens to exercise that right for personal protection while complying with state law.
Travel Across States
Reciprocity agreements mean your permit may be recognized in dozens of other states. Knowing which states honor your permit protects you from unintentional violations while traveling.
Legal Clarity
Understanding your state's specific laws — prohibited locations, duty to inform, open carry rules — helps responsible gun owners stay compliant and avoid serious legal consequences.
Responsibility
Even in permitless carry states, voluntary training improves firearm safety. Many permit holders take courses even when not required — a responsible decision that reduces accidents and improves situational awareness.

FAQ

Common Concealed Carry Questions

Constitutional carry (also called permitless carry) means a person who can legally own a firearm can carry it concealed without obtaining a government-issued permit. As of 2026, more than 25 states have adopted some form of permitless carry. However, even in permitless carry states, permits are still available — and often beneficial because they provide reciprocity in other states that require permits.
It depends on reciprocity agreements. Some states (like Florida) have broad reciprocity and honor many other states' permits. Others (like California, New York, Illinois) honor very few or no out-of-state permits. Texas LTC holders have reciprocity in 37+ states. Always check the specific reciprocity list for both your issuing state and the state you're traveling to before carrying.
Validity varies widely: 4 years (Montana), 5 years (most states including Texas, Florida, Ohio, Colorado), 7 years (Florida), 8 years (Tennessee), 10 years (Illinois). Some states issue lifetime permits. When a permit expires, you must renew it — usually with updated background check and renewal fee.
Training requirements vary dramatically. Some states (Arizona, Alaska, Wyoming, Georgia) require no training. Texas requires 4–6 hours including live fire for the LTC. Illinois has the most stringent requirement at 16 hours (8 hours in a classroom, 8 hours on a range). Most states fall in the 4–8 hour range. A few states (Pennsylvania, New Hampshire) require no training at all.
Federal law prohibits carrying in federal buildings, federal facilities, schools, and anywhere federal law specifically prohibits it. State prohibited locations vary but commonly include: courthouses, police/fire stations, hospitals, bars (or establishments with >51% alcohol sales), houses of worship (in some states), polling places, and government meetings. Always check your specific state's list of prohibited locations.
When you cross into another state, that state's laws govern. If the state recognizes your permit (via reciprocity), you can carry per their laws. If not, you cannot carry concealed. Federal law (FOPA) protects travelers transporting firearms in locked containers unloaded and inaccessible, but this does NOT cover concealed carry. Always research each state before crossing.
