Michigan is a shall-issue state requiring a Concealed Pistol License (CPL). Open carry of pistols is allowed with a CPL. No permitless carry. Michigan does not issue non-resident CPLs.

Michigan CCW Training Requirements
Training Required
Michigan requires completion of an approved firearms training course before a permit will be issued.
Minimum training time: 8 hours. Approved training types: NRA-certified pistol course or equivalent; 3 hours range, 5 hours classroom minimum.

Schools, day care centers, sports arenas, bars and taverns, houses of worship (during services), entertainment facilities (2,500+ capacity), hospitals, courts, correctional facilities, casinos, dorms/classrooms
Note: Federal law also prohibits carry in federal facilities, federal courthouses, and other locations regardless of state law. Always check both state and federal restrictions.

Michigan duty to inform: CPL holders must immediately notify law enforcement of CPL status and whether carrying when in a traffic stop or when approached by officer. Michigan has one of the longer prohibited location lists. Applications go to county clerk; licensing board reviews.
