Dungeness Crab Sport Season Coordination Delays Possible
Effective November 1, 2025
Domoic acid concerns tied to commercial Dungeness crab season delays continue to affect coordination with the recreational sport season opener. CDFW has implemented a testing protocol that may push the recreational season opener beyond the traditional November 1 date if domoic acid levels exceed safe thresholds in crab tissue. Anglers are urged to monitor CDFW emergency closures before making trip plans. The 2025 season structure remains tentative pending pre-season testing results from offshore sampling.
Key Changes:
• Sport season opener contingent on domoic acid test results; traditional Nov 1 date not guaranteed
• CDFW will post opener announcements no later than 72 hours before any opening
• Daily bag limit remains 10 Dungeness crab, minimum carapace width 5¾ inches
• Emergency domoic acid closures may apply to specific districts independently
• Recreational crab traps must display current season identification tags

Deer Zone D5 Moves to 3-Point Antler Restriction
Effective July 12, 2025
California's Deer Zone D5 now requires a minimum 3-point antler restriction on at least one side, effective for the 2025 archery and general deer seasons. The change is part of CDFW's effort to increase buck age structure and improve trophy quality in units that have seen declining harvest of mature bucks. Hunters must be able to count three or more antler points (each at least one inch long) on one antler before shooting. This is the first antler-point restriction applied to a Zone D tag in California.
Key Changes:
• Zone D5 buck tags: 3-point minimum (one inch per point) on at least one side
• Applies to both archery and general seasons in Zone D5
• Forked-horn (2-point) and spike bucks are not legal under new restriction
• Antler-point count is taken from the base upward; brow tines count
• Other Zone D units are unaffected; check tag for unit designation

Striped Bass Harvest Banned in Lake Tahoe Tributaries (May–Jul)
Effective May 1, 2025
Effective 2025, harvest of striped bass is prohibited in all Lake Tahoe Basin tributaries from May 1 through July 31. The closure is designed to protect spring-run Chinook salmon that use the same tributaries for spawning migration. Striped bass are aggressive predators that consume juvenile Chinook at high rates, and the temporal closure coincides with peak smolt outmigration. Anglers may still target striped bass in these waters outside the closure window, and harvest remains open in the main lake.
Key Changes:
• No-harvest closure: striped bass in all Tahoe Basin tributaries May 1–Jul 31
• Applies to Lake Tahoe's California tributaries (Upper Truckee, Trout Creek, Ward Creek)
• Catch-and-release only for striped bass during closure window
• Standard striped bass limits apply outside May 1–Jul 31 window
• Closure coordinates with NDOW spring Chinook protection measures on Nevada side
