How to Become a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator in Oklahoma

Find a Sponsor
Contact Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation for a list of licensed rehabilitators in Oklahoma who accept apprentices. The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) also maintains a national directory. Your sponsor will provide hands-on training and vouch for your application.

Complete Required Training
Complete the required wildlife rehabilitation training coursework. Approved courses are available through NWRA, IWRC, and state-specific programs. Training covers animal handling, species identification, basic first aid, housing, nutrition, and safe release techniques.

Submit Your State License Application
Apply to Oklahoma Dept. of Wildlife Conservation with your completed training documentation and sponsor information.

Apply for Federal Migratory Bird Permit (If Needed)
To rehabilitate songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, or any other migratory bird, apply for a federal Migratory Bird Rehabilitation Permit from the USFWS Regional Office after receiving your state license. The federal permit is free but requires demonstrated experience and appropriate facilities. Apply at permits.fws.gov.
