How to Become a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator in Kentucky

Find a Sponsor
Contact Kentucky Dept. of Fish & Wildlife Resources for a list of licensed rehabilitators in Kentucky who accept apprentices. The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) also maintains a national directory. Your sponsor will provide hands-on training and vouch for your application.

Complete Required Training
Complete the required wildlife rehabilitation training coursework. Approved courses are available through NWRA, IWRC, and state-specific programs. Training covers animal handling, species identification, basic first aid, housing, nutrition, and safe release techniques.

Submit Your State License Application
Apply to Kentucky Dept. of Fish & Wildlife Resources with your completed training documentation and sponsor information.

Apply for Federal Migratory Bird Permit (If Needed)
To rehabilitate songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, or any other migratory bird, apply for a federal Migratory Bird Rehabilitation Permit from the USFWS Regional Office after receiving your state license. The federal permit is free but requires demonstrated experience and appropriate facilities. Apply at permits.fws.gov.
