Virginia-Specific Wilderness Rules
Shenandoah NP requires a free backcountry camping permit — register at the park website or visitor center. Must camp at least 0.5 miles from developed areas and roads, 200 feet from streams and trails. Black bears common throughout — use bear boxes at NP shelters. Campfire permits required in GW/Jefferson NF. Virginia has the longest stretch of the AT (more than any other state).
