How to Get a Fishing Guide License in South Carolina
Commercial fishing guides and charter operators in South Carolina must be licensed through South Carolina Department of Natural Resources before accepting any paying clients.
1
Obtain a Personal Fishing License
Before applying for a guide license, you must hold a valid South Carolina fishing license. Guides must have personal fishing licenses for all species they intend to guide. This is separate from the guide license itself.
2
Obtain USCG Credentials
South Carolina requires a USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessel (OUPV / "6-pack") license for charter operations. Complete the required sea time (360 days), pass the USCG exam, and submit your MMC application through the National Maritime Center. Plan for 6–12 months for this process.
3
Secure Required Insurance
South Carolina requires liability insurance for licensed guides. Obtain appropriate coverage from a marine insurer experienced with charter and guide operations. Proof of insurance must be submitted with your application and maintained throughout the license period.
4
Renew Annually & Stay Current
South Carolina fishing guide licenses must be renewed annually. Keep your personal fishing license current, maintain required insurance coverage, and ensure your vessel meets all safety equipment requirements before each season. Guide licenses may be revoked for fishing violations.
