Step-by-Step
How to Get Boating Safety Certified in Rhode Island
Getting your boating safety certification is straightforward and typically takes just a few hours online.
1
Choose an Approved Course
Rhode Island accepts courses from NASBLA-approved providers. Options include: BoatUS Foundation, BoatEd.com. All issue a card recognized throughout Rhode Island.
2
Complete the Course
Online courses take approximately 3–6 hours at your own pace. You can stop and resume at any time. The course covers navigation rules, required safety equipment, life jacket laws, BUI regulations, and Rhode Island-specific rules. You must pass a final exam (typically 70–80% passing score) to receive certification.
3
Receive Your Certificate
After passing the final exam, you will receive a temporary certificate immediately (printable or digital). Your permanent wallet card arrives by mail within 2–4 weeks. Certification is valid for life in Rhode Island and is accepted by most other states - no renewal required.
4
Carry Proof on the Water
Rhode Island law requires you to carry your boating education certificate or card whenever operating a motorboat. Officers may ask to see it during routine safety checks. Keep a digital copy on your phone as a backup.

Rhode Island-Specific Details
Rhode Island requires all motorized vessel operators born on or after January 1, 1986 to carry a valid Boater Education Card while operating on RI waters. The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) Division of Law Enforcement and the RI Marine Patrol jointly enforce boating laws on Narragansett Bay and inland waters. NASBLA-approved out-of-state boating safety cards are accepted as meeting Rhode Island's education requirement.
