Step-by-Step
How to Get Boating Safety Certified in Nevada
Getting your boating safety certification is straightforward and typically takes just a few hours online.
1
Choose an Approved Course
Nevada accepts courses from NASBLA-approved providers. Options include: BoatUS Foundation, BoatEd.com. All issue a card recognized throughout Nevada.
2
Complete the Course
Online courses take approximately 3–6 hours at your own pace. You can stop and resume at any time. The course covers navigation rules, required safety equipment, life jacket laws, BUI regulations, and Nevada-specific rules. You must pass a final exam (typically 70–80% passing score) to receive certification.
3
Receive Your Certificate
After passing the final exam, you will receive a temporary certificate immediately (printable or digital). Your permanent wallet card arrives by mail within 2–4 weeks. Certification is valid for life in Nevada and is accepted by most other states - no renewal required.
4
Carry Proof on the Water
Nevada law requires you to carry your boating education certificate or card whenever operating a motorboat. Officers may ask to see it during routine safety checks. Keep a digital copy on your phone as a backup.

Nevada-Specific Details
Nevada requires all motorized vessel operators born on or after January 1, 1983 to carry a valid boating safety education certificate while on Nevada waters. The Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) and Nevada State Parks Rangers enforce boating laws on Lake Tahoe, Lake Mead, Lake Mohave, and Nevada's inland waterways. NASBLA-approved boating safety cards from other states are accepted in lieu of the Nevada-issued certificate.
