How to Become a Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator in California
1
Find a Sponsor
Contact California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife for a list of licensed rehabilitators in California who accept apprentices. The National Wildlife Rehabilitators Association (NWRA) also maintains a national directory. Your sponsor will provide hands-on training and vouch for your application.
2
Complete Required Training
Complete the required wildlife rehabilitation training coursework. Approved courses are available through NWRA, IWRC, and state-specific programs. Training covers animal handling, species identification, basic first aid, housing, nutrition, and safe release techniques.
3
Prepare Your Facility
California requires a facility inspection before or after license issuance. Ensure your enclosures meet minimum size and safety standards for your target species. Contact California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife for the specific facility requirements checklist.
4
Submit Your State License Application
Apply to California Dept. of Fish & Wildlife with your completed training documentation and sponsor information.
The California wildlife rehabilitation license is free.
5
Apply for Federal Migratory Bird Permit (If Needed)
To rehabilitate songbirds, raptors, waterfowl, or any other migratory bird, apply for a federal Migratory Bird Rehabilitation Permit from the USFWS Regional Office after receiving your state license.
