Illinois permits freshwater spearfishing with a valid Illinois Fishing License; pole spears and Hawaiian slings are the most commonly used gear, and spearguns are legal in most open waters. Spearfishing for largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, and walleye is prohibited in designated areas and during spawning season closures. Lake Michigan spearfishing is allowed under the same freshwater license, and divers must display a diver-down flag within 200 feet on open waters.
