Wild turkeys are North America's largest upland game bird and one of the greatest wildlife conservation success stories — reintroduced from near extinction in the early 20th century to thriving populations in all 49 continental states. Gobblers are identified by dark iridescent bronze-to-green plumage, a naked red and blue head, a breast beard, and leg spurs. The strutting display — tail fanned, wings drooped, body puffed — is unmistakable. The gobbling call carries over a mile. Adult gobblers average 16-25 lbs.
